Follow the Bible

“Follow the Bible” is an initiative sponsored by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and its world divisions to stimulate a deeper interest in reading the Bible. It features a multi-language Bible traveling through countries around the world to large international gatherings inviting and inspiring people to recommit to studying God’s word.

“The major objective of “Follow the Bible” is to inspire millions of Seventh-day Adventists and other Christians to further Bible study,” explains Mark Finley, vice president for the Seventh-day Adventist Church and chairman of Hope Channel’s operating board.

“Recent surveys indicate that less than 50 percent of the church membership is regularly studying the Bible. “Follow the Bible” has the possibility of reigniting the desire to study God’s word. It has the possibility of lifting the average church member to new heights of spirituality through God’s word.”

Large convocations and rallies will take place at each stop along the journey. Attendees will hear inspiring presentations on the importance of studying God’s word, be invited to participate in a daily Bible study plan with others around the globe, and to enroll in the Discover Bible Course.

“Church members in an area where the Bible travels should tell their friends about “Follow the Bible” and invite people of all faiths to attend. This is an outstanding time for a community to know that Seventh-day Adventists are still a “People of the Book,”” says Finley.

The traveling Bible, produced by Pacific Press Publishing Association, is approximately 12 inches wide, 18 inches tall, and three inches thick. It contains nearly 1,500 pages and is bound with a padded leather cover. Each of its 66 books have been translated into a different language, representing that God’s message is for all peoples. It is very similar to the large Bible Ellen White held open in one hand for about a half hour while in vision in 1845.

“Follow the Bible” began October 11 in the Philippines during the church’s Annual Council. Delegates to the Annual Council were challenged to recommit their lives to a study of and faithfulness to God’s Word. The Bible then began its global journey by traveling throughout the Southern Asia Pacific Division, eventually traveling to each world division until the summer of 2010 when it is delivered to President Jan Paulsen during the 59th General Conference Session in Atlanta, Georgia.

There will be a video team producing short reports for Hope Channel and chronicling the “Follow the Bible” story with regular features on Hope Channel’s weekly program “Inside Hope.”

“What if all 16 million Seventh-day Adventists were faithfully studying God’s Word each day? What if they were discovering Jesus personally in His word? What if they had a new vital experience with our Lord? God would pour out His Spirit in abundance and we would see an explosion of witnessing and evangelism like the church has never seen,” adds Finley.
